When it comes to weddings, with so many moving parts and multiple vendors, the dollars really can start to stack up. So, with the current state of the economy, we wanted to share some tips to help you get married sooner. You don't have to sacrifice your dreams to keep your budget in check. Here are some savvy hacks to help you minimise costs, reuse, and repurpose, all while creating an unforgettable celebration.

1. Embrace the Power of DIY
DIY projects can save you a significant amount of money and add a personal touch to your wedding. Here are some ideas to get you started:
  • Invitations and Stationery: Design and print your own invitations using online templates. There are lots of user-friendly tools available that let you customise designs to match your wedding theme.
  • Decor: Get creative with homemade decorations. From hand-painted signs to DIY centrepieces, there’s no limit to what you can create when you put your mind to it Alternatively, hit up op shops, wedding marketplaces to purchase secondhand items that still have life in them.
  • Favors: Craft personalised wedding favours that your guests will cherish. Homemade candles, bath salts, or jars of jam make for heartfelt and budget-friendly gifts.

2. Reuse and Repurpose with Flair
Making the most of what you already have—or can easily get—can make a big difference to your budget. Consider these tips:
  • Bridal Wear: Opt for a pre-loved wedding dress or a simpler gown that can be easily altered. Vintage and second-hand stores or marketplaces often have stunning options at a fraction of the cost.
  • Florals: Reuse your ceremony flowers for the reception. Bouquets can become table centrepieces, and floral arrangements can be moved to different locations throughout the reception.
  • Rentals: Rather than buying new items, rent decor, tableware, and even attire. Many rental services offer elegant options at a lower price than purchasing new.

3. Savvy Shopping for Savings
Smart shopping can lead to significant savings. Here’s how to get the most bang for your buck:
  • Off-Peak Discounts: Choose an off-peak wedding date. Venues and vendors often offer discounts for dates outside of the peak wedding season.
  • Sales and Clearance: Keep an eye out for sales and clearance items. Wedding-themed decor and accessories often go on sale, especially outside of wedding season.
  • Enter competitions: it may seem like a long shot, but if a vendor you like is running a competition to win their services, enter. You never know, you could get lucky.

4. Prioritize Your Expenses
Focus on what truly matters to you and allocate your budget accordingly:
  • Guest List: Reduce your guest list to include only your closest friends and family. A smaller guest list means lower costs for catering, seating, and invitations.
  • Catering: Opt for a buffet or set menu that have been crafted with budget in mind. These options can be more economical and encourage a relaxed atmosphere.

5. Make the Most of Technology
Technology can be a great ally in budget-saving:
  • Website invitations: setting up a website allows you to convey significantly more information than a traditional paper initiation. It can collect and collate your RSVP’s and have the link to an online registry if you are suggesting gift options.
  • Online Registries: Use online wedding registries that offer cash funds or group gifts. This allows guests to contribute to specific needs or experiences rather than physical items.
  • Virtual Planning: Utilize wedding planning apps and tools to stay organized and manage your budget effectively. Many apps offer budgeting features and vendor recommendations.

6. Remove the fluff
In these modern days, there is no one way to plan your wedding, so if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.
  • Favours: time and time again we see people spend hours planning and creating favours (bonbonnieres) to gift their guests as a memento of the celebration. And time and time again we find ourselves throwing copious numbers of them at the end of the night when guests leave without them and the bride and groom don’t want to take them home.
  • Signage: reduce or remove the call is yours, but a menu on each place setting isn’t a necessity. DIY name tags for seated meals. If you want a welcome sign use a mirror or something similar, with printed decal stickers so that you can reuse in your house after the wedding.
  • Transport: If fancy cars are not your thing, ask someone special to drive you in their car. They are heading that way anyway. (And sometimes arriving in a newer model car means no risk of breaking down on the side of the road on the way.)
  • Invest: Invest in the things that matter. A Celebrant to marry you and a location to be married are the two things that get you hitched. The rest comes down to you. If you want amazing photos to remember the day, invest there. If you want a bangin’ vibe, invest in a band or DJ that will have the dance floor jumpin’. It’s your wedding, plan it to suit your budget, wants and needs.
