GETTING INTO THE BUSINESS;
Desfura Weddings was established four years ago, however Caitlin had been documenting weddings long before this. In fact, she assisted her first wedding photographer when she was 16. As time went on, Caitlin continued to assist before freelancing for herself.
Hayden and Caitlin were longtime friends, working in a surf store together whilst studying and freelancing on the side in their early 20’s. A camera fiend, Hayds soon found himself being roped into the wedding industry, assisting Caitlin when needed. Years later, ‘friends’ turned into full-time lovers and naturally our studio Desfura was created. Our common goal was to combine a love of a variety of mediums and our familiarity with current cultures, trends and art. Therefore, it felt like a no-brainer to also form Desfura Weddings. We love that we can share our creative ideas not only with each other but with others within the wedding industry.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE INDUSTRY?
There are many things to love about the wedding industry; meeting new people whether that’s our couple’s, their guests or other vendors - you are bound to meet someone special! It is also with immense pleasure that we get to hear the stories and meet the people who have touched the lives of our couple’s and have watched them grow into the Bride and Groom they are today. We have made lifelong friends through working within the industry - how lucky we are to call this our ‘job!’.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE WITHIN THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE?
Our styles vary depending on the type of photography and/or film we are producing. However, within our wedding work, we shoot with a very candid approach. 99.9% of couples state that they don’t do ‘well’ in front of the camera
(Fair. Neither do we!). Utilizing this style allows us to make our couple’s feel more relaxed in front of the lens, consequently resulting in ‘natural’ images. It also captures all of the in-between moments (we are suckers for the pre celebration laughs to the heart-felt tears of your loved ones).

WHAT IS THE BEST/CRAZIEST THING YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED TO DO AT A WEDDING?
We were asked to be the witnesses for one of our couple’s who decided to follow through with their intimate wedding during Covid-19 at the beautiful Flowerdale Estate in the Yarra Valley. We quickly realized that we had to become the bridal party and groomsmen, calming nerves where possible and ensuring that the location was prepped with champagne for post celebratory drinks. It was truly special.
We also can’t forget the incredible Mexican style wedding of Christian and Evelin, where we found ourselves live streaming to Mexico while getting our boogie on to a Mariachi Band! Live streaming at weddings has become the new ‘norm’ in the current climate whilst travel restrictions are still apparent.
Luckily we have worked with couples who haven’t asked us to do anything too crazy yet…touch wood!

WHAT IS ONE QUESTION YOU ASKED YOUR COUPLES THAT BEST HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND THEM & THEIR REQUIREMENTS?
How do they envision their wedding?
What reference photos excites them?! Gaining visual imagery is very helpful!

WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT & WHY?
Our most memorable event would be the wedding of Caitlin & Mark at Burning Man, in Nevada. Why? Caitlin & Mark dressed in all white tied the knot amongst their nearest and dearest who popped in bright coloured outfits as the sun was setting. The backdrop - the desert haze combined with the jaw dropping roaming art created a visual sensory overload, to say the least. It was truly a humbling experience.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TREND AT THE MOMENT OR SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THE INDUSTRY?
We actually love anything ‘off-trend’! Be authentic.
However, in saying this, we do love a ‘first-look’. We agree with ensuring that you get to spend as much time with your loved one as possible on your wedding day!

ANY ADVICE FOR YOUR CLIENTS IN THE PLANNING STAGES OF THEIR WEDDING?
Enjoy the process and take your time! If something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut.

Identify and communicate your wedding priorities and needs to your photographer clearly. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible with your desired outcome in front of mind.

Decide what's most important to you and your partner to be. Do you really need all those fancy table decorations?
Do you really need a trendy donut wall or chocolate fountain?

Remember, the more ‘bits & pieces’ you add to your wedding day, the more there is for you to worry about. Keep things simple!
