Real Wedding | Necla & Ben

wedding ceremony by the water at The Billabong at The Shearing Shed Phillip Island

The wedding that brought two countries, two cultures and one incredible love story together.

Some love stories begin with a swipe.

Most don't begin with two people living on opposite sides of the world.

When Necla and Ben matched on a dating app in November 2022, neither of them could have imagined where that first message would lead. Necla was living in Istanbul. Ben was travelling through Europe, with every intention of staying in the city for only a few days before continuing his adventure.

Instead, one spontaneous decision over a drink in a neighbourhood bar changed everything.

By the end of the night, hours had disappeared.

The conversation never seemed to run out.

And somewhere between the laughter and getting completely lost in each other's stories, a holiday romance quietly decided it wasn't going to be a holiday romance after all.

A city neither of them will ever forget.

One of the things we love most about Necla and Ben's story is how ordinary it began.

No grand plans.

No elaborate first date.

Just two people who realised they were only a couple of streets apart in Istanbul's Kadıköy neighbourhood.

They met at a little bar called Berlin Platz, expecting nothing more than a casual drink.

Instead, they found someone who immediately felt familiar.

From that night on, they barely spent a day apart.

Ben met Necla's housemates almost immediately, and before long, he'd become part of the household. His plans to continue travelling quietly disappeared as the pair built a life together in Turkey over the next year.

It all happened surprisingly quickly.

Not because they rushed anything, but because real life arrived early.

They cooked together.

Travelled together.

Built routines.

Met each other's closest friends.

Experienced all the ordinary moments that usually take years to unfold.

It didn't take long to realise they'd already found what most people spend a lifetime looking for.

behind the ceremony - loved ones

Love doesn't always take the easy road.

Of course, every great love story has its challenges.

For Necla and Ben, that challenge came in the form of nearly 15,000 kilometres.

After getting engaged, life became a balancing act between Australia and Turkey.

Months together.

Weeks apart.

Always counting down until the next reunion.

Long-distance relationships have a way of stripping everything back to what really matters, and for these two, every goodbye simply reinforced what they already knew.

Home wasn't a country anymore.

It was wherever the other person happened to be.

Eventually, in November 2024, they closed the distance for good, settling into life together in Melbourne.

Their wedding would become more than a celebration of their marriage.

It would become the first time every chapter of their story finally came together in one place.

Finding the perfect backdrop.

Long before they officially moved to Australia, they'd already stumbled across The Shearing Shed while researching venues from overseas.

Something about it kept drawing them back.

Perhaps it was the relaxed atmosphere.

The character of the buildings.

Or the way the venue seemed to belong naturally within the landscape rather than competing with it.

When they finally visited in person, the decision felt wonderfully simple.

"We already knew where we wanted to get married."

That confidence shaped the entire planning process.

Rather than trying to transform the venue into something it wasn't, they embraced everything that already made it beautiful.

Soft earthy tones.

Native-inspired florals.

Layers of greenery.

Warm textures.

Nothing felt overdone.

Everything simply belonged.

The little details that told their story.

Some weddings are remembered for spectacular styling.

Others are remembered for the tiny details that guests continue talking about years later.

For Necla and Ben, those details quietly appeared throughout the day.

Ben spent months growing eucalyptus seedlings from seed, giving one to every guest to take home.

Alongside them sat Turkish Delight, lovingly brought from Turkey so friends and family could share a small piece of Necla's home.

Neither favour was extravagant.

Both were deeply personal.

And perhaps that's what made them so memorable.

When two worlds finally became one.

There wasn't a dry eye in sight when Ben's father walked Necla down the aisle after her own father was unable to travel.

Meanwhile, thousands of kilometres away, her parents watched the ceremony live from Turkey.

It was a beautiful reminder that love has an incredible way of shrinking even the greatest distances.

Friends travelled from across the world.

Family gathered from both countries.

The people who had witnessed the beginning of their story in Istanbul stood alongside the people who would now help write the next chapter in Australia.

It felt less like two families meeting.

More like one very large family finally finding each other.

first dance as husband and wife surrounded by family and friends

From heartfelt ceremony to unforgettable party.

One of the things Necla and Ben hoped for most was that the day would never feel overly formal.

Judging by the dance floor, they succeeded.

As the sun disappeared and the celebration moved into the evening, the atmosphere shifted from intimate to electric.

Turkish music filled the room.

Australian guests enthusiastically joined Turkish dancing.

Cultures blended.

Languages mixed.

Laughter became universal.

Even their first dance reflected exactly who they were.

Beginning quietly before building into a full dance-floor moment as friends rushed in to join them, it perfectly captured the spirit of the entire wedding.

Warm.

Relaxed.

Joyful.

Completely inclusive.

Exactly as they'd imagined.

Sometimes the weather writes its own story.

The only thing they couldn't plan?

The weather.

After almost 100 millimetres of rain in the week leading up to the wedding, the forecast looked... less than encouraging.

Like every couple planning an outdoor ceremony, they refreshed the weather app more times than they'd care to admit.

Then, almost overnight, everything changed.

Blue skies.

Warm sunshine.

Not a cloud worth worrying about.

Looking back, they still describe it as surreal.

As though the universe quietly decided to give them the day they'd been hoping for all along.

The best weddings aren't perfect.

They're personal.

Looking back, Necla and Ben don't remember every decision they agonised over during planning.

They remember watching friends from opposite sides of the world laughing together over dinner.

They remember stealing a quiet moment together at sunset.

They remember hearing Turkish music echo through the reception while Australian guests threw themselves into the dancing.

Most of all, they remember the overwhelming feeling that every piece of their life had somehow found its way into one room.

When we asked what marriage means to them, their answer couldn't have been simpler.

"It's about building a life together as a team."

After everything they'd already navigated together—different countries, different cultures, long-distance and countless airports—we'd say they're off to a pretty remarkable start.

Congratulations again, Necla and Ben.

Thank you for allowing us to play a small part in bringing your two worlds together. We have no doubt your greatest adventures are still ahead of you.
